Il bombardamento che colpì il paese di Castagneto il 14 aprile 1945 ha cancellato le testimonianze della sua antica storia.
Fu possedimento feudale dei Montecuccoli e infine dei Bagnesi. Divenne tristemente noto al tempo del brigantaggio cinquecentesco, quando Cato e alcuni altri membri della famigerata famiglia “da Castagneto” in lotta con i Tanari di Gaggio Montano nel bolognese sconvolsero il Frignano con le loro azioni violente.
Dopo i tragici fatti della seconda guerra mondiale che portarono distruzione e morte, durante i quali dai tedeschi fu ucciso il giovane parroco don Donini, il paese di Castagneto fu ricostruito insieme alla chiesa e al campanile, inaugurati con solenni festeggiamenti l’8 agosto 1954.
Sul campanile furono ricollocate le vecchie campane, di cui i parrocchiani vanno orgogliosi e che celebrano con una apposita festa in agosto.
Alcuni borghi vicini, come Villa Bibone, la Morra, Ca’ di Bartolomeo, Ca’ Morano, mantengono un certa importanza storica e architettonica.
Alla Morra, casa a corte chiusa che diventò nel Settecento di proprietà dei notai Ricci di Montecuccolo, nacque Ludovico Ricci, celebre uomo politico e intellettuale, cui tra l’altro si deve una preziosa descrizione del Ducato di Modena.

The bombing that hit the town of Castagneto on 14 April 1945 erased the evidence of its ancient history.
It was a feudal property of the Montecuccoli first and the Bagnesi later.
It became sadly known during the 16th century brigandage, when Cato and some other members of the notorious “da Castagneto” family fighting with the Tanari of Gaggio Montano in the Bolognese area shocked the Frignano with their violent actions.
Following the tragic events of the Second World War that brought death and destruction, during which the young parish priest Don Donini was killed by the Germans, the town of Castagneto was rebuilt together with the church and the bell tower, inaugurated with solemn celebrations on 8 August 1954.
The old bells, of which the parish priests are proud and which they celebrate with a special celebration in August, were relocated on the bell tower. Some nearby hamlets such as Villa Bibone, la Morra, Ca’ di Bartolomeo and Ca’ Morano, maintain a certain historical and architectural importance.
Ludovico Ricci, a famous politician and intellectual to whom among other things we owe a valuable description of the Dukedom of Modena, was born in La Morra, a house with a closed courtyard that became the property of the Ricci di Montecuccolo notaries in the eighteenth century.
