Il Duca Francesco IV (1815-1846) scelse Pavullo come propria residenza estiva, facendovi costruire il Palazzo Ducale. La costruzione dell’edificio, progettata dall’ingegner Sante Cavani, durò con varie interruzioni dal 1830 al 1844 circa. È un edificio a tre piani, perfettamente simmetrico secondo lo stile neoclassico, dalle linee semplici ed eleganti. Dopo la fine del Ducato di Modena (1859) il Palazzo diventò proprietà dello Stato e fu adibito a diversi usi.
Attualmente è la sede del Servizio cultura, sport e tempo libero del Comune di Pavullo, delle Gallerie Civiche (Galleria Contemporanea e Galleria Francesca IV d’Austria – Este), della Fabbrica delle Arti e della Biblioteca Comunale “G. Santini”.

Duke Francesco IV (1815 – 1846) chose Pavullo as his summer residence, having the Palazzo Ducale built there. The construction of the building, designed by the engineer Sante Cavini, lasted with various interruptions from 1830 to 1844 (approx). It’s a three-storey building, perfectly symmetrical according to the neoclassical style, with simple and elegant lines. After the end of the Dukedom of Modena (1859) the Palace became property of the state and was used for various purposes. It is currently the seat of the Civic Galleries (Contemporary Art Gallery and Francesco IV d’Austria – Este Gallery) and of the Municipal Library “G. Santini.
