English version
Once upon a time, in the faraway lands of Frignano, there was a village lost among the rolling green hills, where the inhabitants were always quarrelling. They fought over who should play the church organ, over the fruit in the fields, over the division of farmland; they even argued in the square every single morning. Every day brought a different dispute! Over the years, the lords of the manor changed, but the feuds between families remained.
At times, even the festive ringing of the bells could not prevent the loud, angry voices from piercing the church walls and shattering the precious silence of that place. No one knew it back then, but within the walls of what had once been a castle, there slept characters that Man had painted and then buried beneath layers of white.
It was these very figures who, one day, exhausted by being awakened by the shouts of the villagers, decided to emerge from the mists of time. Saints and dragons struck a truce and sought, through the strength and wisdom of the centuries, to step into the real world. Yet, magic remained unseen to eyes blinded by rage; the townspeople could not see it, and the figures wandered through the crowd in the square in vain.
Only a beggar, cold and untidy, sitting in a corner, looked up and saw, to his amazement, a dragon flying to and fro. The beggar’s name was Carlo, just like the priest who, many years later, would lead the local church. He was weary and weakened by hunger, and at first, he thought his imagination was playing tricks on him. But then he looked again, squinting his eyes, and when he called out, the dragon not only answered him, but drew near and curled up at his feet like a puppy.
At a later time other wise figures appeared, dressed in long robes; they gathered around him and spoke. Was it possible to do something? But he was the lowliest of the poor, and the wealthy lords of the place would never listen to him. The arrogance of the powerful only falters before those who are even stronger. And so, the beggar wished to be strong himself. He wished and he wished, and his wish came to life.
Suddenly, the dragon became visible to everyone. It let the poor man climb onto its back and soared up to perch upon the tower. Everyone looked up, struck dumb, as the beggar spoke with strength and wisdom: he spoke of peace, love, forgiveness, and friendship. The dragon flapped its wings and nodded its head. Then, a miracle occurred! After years of struggles, the people finally learned the meaning of the word “KINDNESS”, and from that day on, the village was named “Montebonello”, so that they would never forget it again!
